With over twenty-five years of appellate experience, including five in Seventh Circuit leadership, and nearly twenty as a law professor teaching students how to handle appeals, Sarah Schrup will assist with all aspects of your client’s appeal. Sarah has argued in the United States Supreme Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the Seventh Circuit. She has worked on more than 180 cases in the United States Supreme Court, including 54 merits-stage cases, as well as more than 75 petitions for certiorari and amicus briefs in support of certiorari, and has coordinated and participated in 65 moot courts for counsel arguing at the Court. Sarah has also first-chaired more than 40 appeals in the Seventh Circuit, and has obtained reversal or remand for her clients in 35% of those cases, more than four times the national reversal rate. In her role as the Circuit Executive for the Seventh Circuit she created and set the oral argument calendar for the court, served as Secretary of the Circuit’s Judicial Council, attended the biannual meetings with chief circuit judges and judiciary leadership at the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, participated in national judicial policy-making, collaborated with and assisted district court judges throughout the circuit, and was a member of the Court’s internal rules committee as well as its Advisory Committee on Circuit Rules. She is intimately familiar with court procedures and motion practice. She concluded her time at the court as General Counsel to the Chief Judge. Sarah co-authored a textbook, Advanced Appellate Advocacy, with the aim of providing law students and appellate practitioners a guide to mastering appeals, and has presented nationally on legal writing and argumentation. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2019, she taught oral advocacy and logic to students at Bhutan’s first law school.
